Stressed About Money After Summer? The 3-Step Plan to Find Your Calm (And Your Savings)

The last thing I wanted to do on September 1st was look at my bank account. Does that sound familiar? 😬

Maybe you had a vacation, went to a bunch of weddings, or just enjoyed a “yes” summer—saying yes to brunch, yes to last-minute trips, and yes to all the fun things you missed out on. Now that fall is here and reality is setting in, you might be feeling a little stressed about your finances.

I’ve been there more times than I can count. I used to let that stress eat at me, avoiding my bank app and hoping for the best. But I learned that avoiding the problem only makes it worse. The good news? You don’t need a crazy, complicated budget. You just need a simple plan to get your financial “pantry” back in order.

This is my 3-step “Money Reset” to help you find calm and get back in control. It only takes about 15 minutes, and it’s a completely judgment-free process. Promise. 😉

Step 1: The 15-Minute Money Map 🗺️

Forget the big, scary word “budget.” For this step, we’re just creating a map of where your money went.

Set a timer for 15 minutes. Open your bank account and credit card statements from last month. Grab a notebook or a simple spreadsheet. Now, just list every single purchase. Don’t worry about categorizing anything or feeling guilty. We’re not fixing anything yet, we’re just observing. 👀

The goal is to see a clear picture of your spending. This simple exercise helps you spot patterns you didn’t even know you had.

Step 2: Spot Your “Money Leaks” 💧

Once you have your money map, it’s time to play a little game called “Spot the Leak.” Look for a few things that surprise you. Common money leaks are:

  • The subscription you forgot about. That old streaming service, a gym membership you never use, or a free trial that turned into a monthly charge.
  • Impulse buys. That random online shopping spree or the stack of items you bought from Target when you “only needed paper towels.”
  • The “Daily Habit.” The morning coffee run, the takeout lunch, or the after-work drinks. A little bit adds up to a lot!

Don’t beat yourself up about these. We all have them! Just highlight 2-3 of these leaks that you can fix easily this month. Maybe you’ll cancel that unused subscription or pack lunch three days a week.

Step 3: Fill Your Pantry with Purpose ✨

Now for the best part. Take the money from those “leaks” and put it somewhere else. This is where you get to be intentional with your money, rather than just letting it disappear.

Think of it like stocking your financial “pantry.” You can fill it with things that will serve you later. For example:

  • Start a “sinking fund” for your next vacation or the holidays.
  • Put the money toward a small debt to pay it off faster.
  • Move it into a high-yield savings account to grow your emergency fund.

This small act of redirecting your money from “leaks” to something meaningful will make you feel in control. It’s all about intentionally building the life you want, one small step at a time.

Remember, this isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. You’re taking an important step just by being here and thinking about your money. You got this. ❤️
